As Community 1.0 involves distractions, confused messaging, algorithmic challenges and lack of privacy, a decision to migrate to an online community platform is understandable. In fact, in The 7 Best Membership & Subscription Community Platforms, we delved into the variety of options that are available in the current marketplace.

More importantly, in Community 2.0: Reasons Why Membership Business Owners Are Abandoning Facebook Groups, we stated a few factors to consider before migrating.

We have compiled a Community Migration Checklist template to ensure that your move to an online community platform is as smooth as possible should you choose to be a part of Community 2.0.

Current Platform

Survey the effectiveness and popularity of your current online community platform. If a substantial percentage of members want to and would migrate, then opting for a new platform is probably the right choice. It will also be important to give your members a choice between platforms.

New Platform - Cost Estimation

Estimate the total cost of migrating to a new online community platform and weigh up the result with your allocated budget. The total cost of the new platform involves the cost of the platform itself, the members who churn, the training, the onboarding, the migration time and the forfeited opportunities. The last cost, for example, may include the features you will leave behind on your current platform.

New Platform - Return Estimation Estimate the return on investment for moving to a new online community platform. Member retention rates can be estimated by using the ‘Percentage of Members Who Would Migrate’ in the ‘Current Platform’ section. Take an educated guess for member acquisition. Also, note the revenue-enhancing features and benefits of your new online community platform. New Platform Migration

Formulate a strategy for migration. Shortlist several migration incentives to persuade the less convinced. Also, if your current platform is free, it is worth documenting exactly how you will use this once you introduce a new platform. For example, Facebook Groups can still be used as a lead generation tool instead of hosting the entirety of membership and an online community. Finally, outline the training, onboarding and success criteria associated with your migration decision.
